Shop local and park for free on Small Business Saturday

Mendip District Council is offering free parking at selected car parks across the district on Saturday, 3 December, to support Small Business Saturday.
The Council is encouraging shoppers to visit our high streets and purchase locally to support our independent businesses.
Small Business Saturday is celebrating its 10-year anniversary. Free parking will be available in the following Council-owned car parks to support this initiative:
- Cattle Market Car Park, Frome
- St John's Car Park, Glastonbury
- Great Ostry Car Park, Shepton Mallet
- Cranhill Road Car Park, Street
- Union Street Car Park, Wells

Cllr Simon Carswell, Portfolio Holder for Economic Development, said: "It’s great to once again support Small Business Saturday. Our high streets are packed with fantastic local retail businesses and this important campaign shines the light directly on them.
“The cost of living crisis is having an impact and now more than ever small businesses are facing tough circumstances. Let’s do all we can to support them.”
Remember, it is free to park in all Mendip owned car parks after 6pm including on county Carnival nights at Shepton Mallet, Glastonbury and Wells.
Residents are asked to note that all terms and conditions of car parking within the relevant car parks remain in force - including maximum time limits. To ensure everyone has a fair chance to enjoy this offer, please don't overstay. Please don't park in disabled bays, unless you are a blue badge holder. And park responsibly, by staying within the parking bay markings, and avoiding hatched lined areas, for safety reasons.
Penalty charges will be issued if you breach the conditions. There is an appeals process, details of which can be found on your parking ticket.

Please note the following announcement, and a message from the Leader of Mendip District Council, Cllr Ros Wyke.

Dear Members and Parishes

The funeral of HM The Queen, Elizabeth ll, will take place on Monday September 19. It will be a day of national mourning and a Bank Holiday. The service will be televised and a national two minute silence observed in honour of Her Majesty at 12 noon.

The Queen sadly passed away on Thursday, September 8, 2022, aged 96. She had spent 70 years on the throne - the longest ever serving Monarch in British history.

The Leader of Mendip District Council, Cllr Ros Wyke, said:
“ There is a profound sense of loss following news of the Queen’s death. Her passing marks the end of a truly remarkable reign.
In representing our country, Elizabeth ll demonstrated great dignity and duty. We all admired her enduring public service and leadership, spanning seven decades.

She was much admired abroad, and loved here. She was the head of our nation and will be deeply missed.

Our thoughts are with her family and we offer our new King, His Majesty Charles III, our condolences, and our support as they make preparations for the state funeral on September 19.

We know local residents will want to pay their respects in their own way to the late Queen, and so welcome the Bank Holiday announcement today.

Your District Council has put in place arrangements to support residents in expressing their sympathies. We have opened a Book of Condolence at our Council offices at Cannards Grave, Shepton Mallet. And the laying of flowers is welcome on the grass area under the flag pole. ”
ENDS

HM The Queen

On behalf of its residents Norton St Philip Parish Council offers our deepest sympathies to the Royal family on the passing of HM The Queen.

More information about books of condolence, church services, floral tributes and funeral arrangements will follow shortly.

Council Meeting - September 2022

Following the death of HM The Queen this is to confirm the impact of the period of national mourning on the transaction of Council business.

A period of national mourning affects the computation of days for Council meeting purposes. Councils are required to give three clear days’ notice of meetings – this is calculated not including the day of issue, the day of the meeting, Christmas, Easter, Sundays, Bank Holidays and days of national mourning). Days of national mourning are therefore excluded for calculation of time and any timescales that were due to commence in this period now have to be postponed until the first day after the period of national mourning in accordance with s243 of the Local Government Act 1972.

This means that from today the PC is unable to legally issue a notice of meeting. This means that the Council meeting scheduled for Wednesday 21st September will need to be postponed.

The first day notice can now legally be served will be following the conclusion of the period of national mourning, expected to be on or about 20th September.

The PC will advise the date of the rescheduled meeting once this has been set.
